Vertical D-Sub Vertical D-Sub Socket 9p Female Connector – 9 Position Solder Type for PCB Mounting 9p female connector
9 Pin D-Sub Female Connector for Vertical PCB Mounting
A Vertical D-Sub socket 9p is one of the most common interface parts in electronics, and it has barely changed in decades. Nine socket contacts sit in a trapezoid-shaped metal shell, so a plug can only go in one way. DB09-F01 is the vertical version: the pins go into the board and the opening faces away from it.
Vertical mounting suits products where the connector is reached from above, for example a test fixture, an instrument with a hinged lid, a backplane, or a board that sits behind a cut-out in a top panel. If the port has to face the edge of the board instead, use a right-angle part such as the D-sub female connector 15p angled in the 15-pin size, or the D-Sub plug 9p right angle on the male side.
The socket is female. By the usual convention, a female receptacle on the equipment takes a cable that ends in a male plug. If you need the opposite gender for the mating half, the D-sub 9p male connector is on the same range.
The D-sub family is described in the D-subminiature overview, and the rest of our range is listed under D-Sub connectors.

Solder Type D-Sub Receptacle: What It Gives Your Board
One Way to Mate
The trapezoid shell prevents a plug from going in upside down, so a technician cannot bend a contact by forcing the wrong orientation.
Solder Pins, Fixed to the Board
A solder type D-Sub receptacle is soldered into the board, so it stays in place under repeated plugging. It works with wave soldering on a production line and with hand soldering for prototypes and repairs.
Vertical Access
The opening faces up from the board. That gives you a simple stack-up in enclosures where the cable comes in from the top and no edge of the board is free.
Defined Mating Forces
Insertion and withdrawal force are both listed at 30N maximum, so you can plan plugging effort and strain relief for the rest of the assembly.
If your design uses a larger D-sub size, see the D-sub female 15 pin PCB mount vertical or the vertical D-sub connector 25 pin.
Serial Port D-Sub Connector Applications
The nine-position shell is best known as a serial port D-Sub connector. The pin assignments for RS-232 on this shell are described in the RS-232 reference. It is also used well beyond that, wherever a robust, screw-lockable connection is preferred over a small consumer plug.
Pin Numbering and the “DB9” Name
Most people say “DB9”, but the correct name for the nine-position standard shell is DE-9. In the D-sub naming scheme the second letter is the shell size, and E is the size that holds nine contacts. The name that stuck comes from the larger DB-25 shell. Search for either name and you will find the same part.
One thing catches people out: pin numbering on a female connector is a mirror image of the male. When you look into the socket, the top row is numbered 5 to 1 from left to right, and the bottom row 9 to 6. Check the numbers on the drawing before you route the board.
For a serial link, the common assignment on the equipment side is shown below. Confirm it against your own interface specification, because some devices wire the pins differently.
| Pin | Common RS-232 signal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Carrier detect |
| 2 | Receive data |
| 3 | Transmit data |
| 4 | Data terminal ready |
| 5 | Signal ground |
| 6 | Data set ready |
| 7 | Request to send |
| 8 | Clear to send |
| 9 | Ring indicator |
Our own guides go deeper: read the D-Sub connector guide for selection tips, and D-Sub connector pin definitions for signal assignments in different standards.
Mounting and Soldering Notes
Follow the hole pattern on the drawing exactly. A D-sub socket has two rows of pins plus mounting points, and a hole that is a fraction of a millimeter off will make the part sit crooked and put stress on the joints.
A connector that is plugged and unplugged often carries that force into the solder joints. Support the board near the connector, use the screw-lock hardware where the shell allows it, and do not let the weight of a heavy cable hang from the port. If the cable is long, clamp it inside the enclosure.
Keep parts in their bag or tray until the line needs them. Handle the pins by the shell so they stay clean, since oil from fingers can spoil a solder joint.
How to Order and Get Samples
Send the part number, packaging (bag or tray), quantity and target delivery date through the contact page, or use the Get a Quote button at the top of this page. If you are replacing a part from another brand, include its complete part number so we can compare the drawing before you order.
Samples are available for engineering evaluation. We normally reply within one working day with pricing, lead time and a datasheet.
Vertical D-Sub Socket 9p Female Connector: Frequently Asked Questions
Is DB9 the same as DE-9?
In everyday use, yes. DE-9 is the correct name for the nine-position standard shell, and “DB9” is the popular name. Both describe the same connector.
What does “vertical” mean for this connector?
The pins go straight into the PCB and the mating opening faces away from the board, so a plug connects from above. For a port that faces the edge of the board, choose a right-angle version.
Is this a male or female connector?
It is female, a socket with nine receptacle contacts. It takes a male plug on the cable. Our D-sub 9p male connector is the matching gender.
What are the insertion and withdrawal forces?
Both are listed at 30N maximum. Ask for the datasheet if you need the full test conditions.
Can you supply cables and other D-sub sizes?
Yes. We offer other D-sub sizes and build complete cable assemblies on request.
